· Classification of the Natural Communities of North Carolina (Third Approximation)
Michael P. Schafale and Alan S. Weakley, 1990
Descriptions of all the natural community types in the state (112 types and subtypes), including vegetation, soils, physical environment, dynamics, distinguishing features, examples, and associated rare plants. Note: A new edition (the 4th Approximation) is in preparation but no publication date is set. The 3rd Approximation remains the system used in the Natural Heritage Program's database.

· Conservation Assessment of the Southeast Coastal Plain of North Carolina, Using Site-Oriented and Landscape-Oriented Analyses
Stephen P. Hall and Michael P. Schafale with John T. Finnegan, March 1999
An analysis of the southern portion of the North Carolina Coastal Plain done in partnership between NHP, NC GAP, and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Information obtained from ground-based surveys was integrated with vegetation cover data obtained from remote sensing in order to identify key areas needed for the conservation of a comprehensive set of native ecosystems. Identification of information gaps was also an important goal of this project.

This publication is also available on CD at a cost of $15.00.
