The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program maintains the official inventory of the natural heritage resources of North Carolina. The program classifies the natural communities and tracks rare species and rare natural communities in the state. These rare species and natural communities are the focus of biodiversity conservation efforts. NCNHP maintains a database of specific locations based on natural area surveys conducted by staff as well as data contributed from the scientific community, published literature, and specimen records.

The Natural Heritage Program is now accepting applications for 2 field biologists to conduct surveys of peatlands and pocosins within the Outer Coastal Plain of North Carolina, with focus on the Albemarle-Pamlico region. One position is full-time and one position is part-time. Both positions run through September 1, 2025. The project includes mapping the extent, assessing the condition, and classifying the types of natural communities currently occupying peat soils. This will contribute to the overall understanding of the extent of high-quality peatland natural communities and restorable peatlands and help guide restoration and conservation. The position may also assist in the development of the Natural Heritage Program biological inventory database, particularly the documentation of exemplary natural communities, rare species and habitats, and invasive species.
The positions are home-based. The workstation is the employee’s home-based office using an agency provided computer.
